- Nick Arnold is Britain’s best-selling children’s science writer.
- His Horrible Science books for Scholastic have sold over five million copies in the UK and an estimated ten million more worldwide.
- The books are published in 38 languages.
- They won the Rhone-Poulenc Prize in 1997 and the Aventis Prize in 2004.
- There are now more than 20 books in the series. Recent titles include Measly Medicine, The Horrible Science of Everything, Evil Inventions and the Horrible Science Handbook series – books designed to train children to become horrible scientists in their own right!.
- In 2007 Nick Arnold’s Seriously Squishy Science Book became the first-ever non-fiction book to feature as a World Book Day £1 title. A few months later a free copy of Evil Inventions was offered to all 11-year-olds in the UK as part of the Booked Up! project. Evil Inventions was the only non-fiction title amongst the twelve books offered and in fact proved to be the most popular with young readers!
- Also in 2007 Nick Arnold founded and became Director of the Appledore Book Festival. The Festival proved an instant winner with its blend of innovation, friendliness, and charitable fundraising. In 2008 it was recognised by the Times as one of Britain’s top 30 Book Festivals.
Horribly true facts about Nick Arnold …
- Nick Arnold has wanted to be an author ever since he was eight.
- He lives in Devon in a big “haunted” house by the sea.
- In 1998 Nick broke his arm whilst performing a Horrible Science show. He finished the show and signed books before he was rushed to hospital.
- Although Nick Arnold is best-known for science books he is not a trained scientist. His degrees are in history.
- Nick Arnold was the first British children’s writer to do a promotional tour of China. In 2007 Nick Arnold was the first UK children’s author to found a full-scale literature festival – in Appledore, Devon.
- Horrible Science is over ten years old many of its readers weren’t even born when the series first hit the shelves.
